TAO TE CHING 63

tig and mag

Act without acting

Work without working

Taste without tasting

The Great and the small

The many and the few

Repay ill-treatment with integrity

Prepare for difficulty

Whilst things are still easy

Take care of great matters

While they are still small

The difficult undertakings in the world

Must surely have their origins in easiness

The great undertakings in the world

Must surely have their origins in smallness

Therefore, the sage

To the very end

Does not act great

And thereby accomplishes greatness

Truly, quick promises

And rash commitments

Are lacking in depth and sincerity

Too much easiness

Surely results in great difficulty

Therefore, the sage

Embraces difficult things

So that in the end

He is without difficulty!
